Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary : Where the Rhinos greet you.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Morigaon district of Assam and is 60 kms from the capital city of Guwahati. The Sanctuary is spread over an area of about 39 sq. km. and is famous for the one-horn rhinos and has the highest density of Rhino population. The sanctuary is also home to a large number of migratory birds. Major wild life sighted in the forest include Asiatic Buffaloes, Wild boars, Civet cat, Leopard, Monkeys etc Pobitora’s aquatic environment is rich which attracts the birds.
The wetlands of the Sanctuary attracts large variety of resident and migratory birds across the year mostly during the winters. Some of the bird species found at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary are : Spot-Billed Duck, Black Kite, Pallas’s Fishing Eagle, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle, White Rumped Vulture, Crested Serpent Eagle, Pied Harrier, Common Kingfisher, Greylag Goose, Gadwall, Spot-Billed Duck, Northern Shoveller, Ferruginous Pochard, Darter, Little Egret, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Great ,Indian Pond Heron, Greater Coucal, Pied Kingfisher, Black Necked Stork, Lesser Adjutant And Greater Adjutant Stork, Spotted Dove, Eurasian Collared Dove, Bronzed Drongo, Common Iora, Common Woodshrike White Throated Kingfisher, Barn Swallow, Blue Winged Leafbird, Bronze Winged Jacana, Long Tailed Shrike, Grey Backed Shrike, Lineated Barbet, Blue Throated Barbet, Red Throated Flycatcher, Grey Headed Canary Flycatcher, Oriental Magpie Robin, Purple Sunbird.
