Nameri National Park: Birding by the Riverside.
Nameri National Park, located in Sonitpur district of Assam, is one of the most beautiful forests in the region. The National Park is spread over 213 sq. km and located in the foothills of Himalayas. Tezpur is the nearest town. Birding,Wildlife, River rafting and forest visits are the major attractions of the park. The National Park is also a Tiger Reserve of Assam and consists mostly of deciduous forests. On the Northern part of the park lies the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Wildlife species in the National Park includes the Sloth Bear, Gaur (Indian Bison), Asiatic wild dog, Hog Deer, Wild Boar, Himalayan Black Bear, Capped Langur, Indian Giant Squirrel, Tiger, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Sambar, Assamese macaque and many other species There is also a large variety of Fauna in the park and species of non aquatic grasslands have also been found here.
The area is a paradise for birders with over 300 species of the avian community is found in the forests. The white winged wood duck (an endangered species) which is also the state bird of Assam, is one of the major attractions for the bird watchers. Other species found are Drongos, Asian fairy Blue bird, Bee-eaters, Babblers, Plovers, Mainas, Barbets, Bulbuls, Hornbills, White-cheeked Partridge, Great, Wreathed, and Rufous-necked Hornbills, Ruddy, Blue-eared, and Oriental Dwarf Kingfishers, Oriental Hobby, Amur Falcon, Jerdon’s and Black Baza, Pallas’s, Grey-headed and Lesser Fish Eagles, Silver-backed Needletail, Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Blue-naped Pitta, Slender-billed Oriole, Hill Blue Flycatcher, White-crowned Forktail, Sultan Tit, Black-bellied Tern, Jerdon’s Babbler, Rufous-backed Sibia, Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker, Red-throated Pipit, Long-billed Plover and Ibis bill.
